Linux forum

Postby Boris » Sunday 19. September 2004, 18:15

There are coming up quite often Linux related questions. So I was thinking of opening a Linux forum in Realsoft Talk.
First question is: Is there any interest for such a forum and
second question: Is there anyone volunteering as moderator for this forum.
Feel free to send me a private mail if you are in the mood for this moderator job.

That would be a good idea!, I think there are many Linux users out there that have many questions to ask but because of the lack or forums can't and don't ask

I really do hope that Linuxians use the mailing list as well to ask questions

I definately prefer a forum discussion over a mailing list. I think that a forum dedicated to Linux issues would be good. I will probably not use Realsoft 3D under Linux much - except for the distributed renderer, if I can ever get that to work.

I second that. Some people like that the mailing list is only for bug reports and very vital questions. However, there are always several issues that aren't so vital, but still need a proper discussion about. You can't really discuss through the mailing list. It's only for changing bug information and corrupted files.

Or should the title be "Realsoft for alternative operating systems", like MacOS and Irix as well?

The interest in this forum doesn't seem to be very high. No Linuxer was interested in moderating such forum. Nevertheless I open this forum. Well fre_ber and jounihat can have at least some smalltalk there ;) and maybe after my update of my linux server and the network daemon fre_ber and me can swear as duo that it won't work :P

What would be required of a moderator? As far as I have seen, this site is only visited by mature, sensible people. I don't think that I have seen any thread that really needed a moderator's touch. Now, don't think that I'm sucking up, I'm just comparing to other forums. ;)

If you just need a name for a moderator, I can volounteer. I can't guarantee that I will check posts every day, but since the post rate of this forum isn't very high and the good nature of the members, I think that this doesn't pose a big problem.

Also, I don't know very much about Linux, I have installed it a couple of times and fiddled a bit, but nothing really advanced. ;)

oh things developed and we may get two advanced Realsoft for Linux users as moderators.

You are right all are very nice behaving here. Here it's not the moderators job to whip bad people or spammers It's also not just the name. His/her (no "her" yet) job is to give the users the feeling that they are not alone and the moderator is caring for the users problems. So every moderator is a specialist for the forum he is moderating and this may also heighten the posting rate. It does already!

I'd like to send a very warm Welcome and a big Thanks to metamorpheus aka Marc Bayer as new Moderator of the Realsoft for Linux Forum. Some of you might know him already as Author of the Quake3 plugin for Linux-Realsoft.
I hope you'll be all nice to him ;) and he has some fun with his new "job" here.

COOL ... now also a welcome to odubtaig aka Paul Duffy as moderator for the Realsoft for Linux forum. That's really great and I'm sure that the Linux forum will be also a very valuable source of knowledge. Many thanks to Paul for spending his time to help the Realsoft community.
