Greetz,

A solid model you got there, with nice attention to detail.
Is the flint-wheel-thingy modelled or bump-textured?

What would really bring out a little more realism is some environment,
such as closeup of lighter on a table, maybe a cigarette& ashtray...
and definitely some interesting lighting, so that the main body part doesn't have such a solid color.

About materials, on my BIC lighter here the flint-wheel-thingy isn't so shiny & reflective,
and in the lower part of the red button there's something that looks like a reflection that maybe shouldn't be there.
Anyways, if the lighter wasn't so freestanding, I'd probably not even notice that..
Looking forward to seeing more.

Daniel

PS: want to make it killer? put a flame on that thing :devilfire:

Really nice model. Nicely done.

The presentaion is lacking. you need to put this thing onto a floor as well as some GI and some HDRI. That should really set this thing off. Use the hdri image to light the scene as well for added realism. I think a ciggy and ash tray wouldn't go a miss either, like Nexyz said.

Good work.

Hi, for the flint wheel and the label on the chrome top I used bump maps. I tried displacement mapping first for the wheel but rendering time explodes to around 20 minutes only for the wheel's displacement (this is not renderman). So I used bump maps, a simple b/w image made with color grades in gimp, they do the same illusion with lower computing power. The wheel is only a rotational nurbs surface. Some of the original image quality lowered through jpg compression. And a little bug is in the picture. If you look inside the chrome cap you see that the plastic is missing, which fixes the cap in place. Thanks for feedback. Marc

Nice model, but the composition of the image is.... weird...

If I read it right it means that this nice model seems out of place in a simple scene.
I personally think there is no point in designing something in a vacuum,
images need to evoke something, tell a story, entertain or inspire, etc...

Obviously you have a "realistic" model there,
so you may want to put it into an equally realistic scene with some more subtle lightcasting etc, so that it blends in a little more.
Could be as simple as a wooden surface (maybe lay the lighter flat down on it, how they are usually found in reality) and a pointlight with falloff,
also don't underestimate the dramatic effect a nice camera angle can have.
Play around :)

Or you bend the rules and make the lighter do something totally out of the box..
You kind of inspired me to a weird idea there... hehehe.
Stay tuned for this,
I'll post some rough outlines some time the next days.

And lastly, don't give up on this, you're on the right track.
It is largely the composition part that always makes me discover new capabilities of this awesome program.
Plus it's a nice habit to see projects through to their final stage.

Hope that helps,
Daniel
